ICE-CAVE & NORTHERN LIGHTS

28 Feb- 6 March 2017

Guided by award-winning landscape-travel photographer : George Thalassinos

Duration: 7 days / 6 nights

Iceland is truly picturesque. Volcanoes, glaciers and towering mountains give shape to the rugged stunning Icelandic nature. It includes black sand beaches, cascading waterfalls, rocky cliffs and dreamlike lagoons which appear around every corner.

The workshop will take you to the most fascinating locations in Iceland’s south coast, including pitch-black volcanic beaches adorned with countless diamond-like icebergs, hidden crystal-blue ice caves, snow-covered volcanoes, frozen lakes and colorful lagoons. We’ll cross icy rivers, explore the insides of immense glaciers, take a monster-truck ride into the depths of the frozen land and behold the incredible Aurora Borealis.

Day 1

                                                                                                                        Arrival

You will be landing at Keflavik airport. I will be there to pick you up in order to take you to your hotel. We will become acquainted with each other and arrange the last details before we begin our photographic  journey

Day 2

Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Vík(Dyrholaey , Reynisfjara)

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Early in the morning, about 2 hours before sunrise, we’ll hop on our bus and head out to see two of Iceland’s south coast’s thundering waterfalls. For sunset we’ll head east, shooting the renowned coastline of Reynisdrangar, later spending the night in a  hotel near the village of Vik.

Seljalandsfoss is one of the best known waterfalls in Iceland. It is 65 meters high according to the National Land Survey of Iceland and it is breathtakingly beautiful. It is possible to walk behind the waterfall so bring a raincoat as you will get wet from the drizzle. It is awesome walking behind Seljalandsfoss.

Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in the country with a width of 25 metres (82 feet) and a drop of 60 m (200 ft). Due to the amount of spray the waterfall consistently produces, a single or double rainbow is normally visible on sunny days.

Reynisfjara is a black pebble beach and features an amazing cliff of regular basalt columns resembling a rocky step pyramid, which is called Gardar. Out in the sea are the spectacularly shaped basalt sea stacks Reynisdrangar. The area has a rich birdlife, including puffins, fulmars and guillemots.

The waves at Reynisfjara are especially strong and unpredictable, and fatal accidents have occurred at this beach, so people are advised to take extra care when visiting the area.

Day 3

Vatnajokull National Park

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

From Vík we travel further east to Vatnajökull National Park and Glacier Lagoon area, on the way we’ll stop at some misterious locations such as the moss covered lave fields in Eldhraun, turf roof churches.

The vast Vatnajokull National Park offers some of the most diverse and spectacular scenery you’ll find in Iceland, with Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest glacier at its center. This park really has everything. As we focus on the southern and eastern part of the park, you will ill get to see beautiful waterfalls such as Svartifoss, with its dark basalt columns.
Ice caves are natural phenomena that are formed in glaciers during winter. Most often they are formed by water running through or under the glacier and new caves are formed every year. We offer tours to two kinds of Ice caves – a naturally formed cave in Vatnajökull glacier and a man-made cave in Langjökull glacier.

Day 4

Vatnajokull National Park

————————————————————— —————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

The Jökulsárlón area is one of the most scenic in Iceland, and perhaps in the world. Ever-changing ice, soft pink light, mountains, lagoons and much more. It’s also is a fantastic spot for shooting the Northern Lights, so if there are good conditions, we’ll drive back to the lagoon for an awesome night-time experience.

The Diamond beach is by Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon in South-East Iceland

Some of the ice-chunks are polished by the ocean and wash ashore again. The ice-chunks on the Diamond beach make for very good photo opportunities

Day 5

Stokksnes-Vik

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Vesturhorn, often called “Batman Mountain,” is a beautiful mountain (454 m/1450 ft high) where very steep cliffs meet a flat, black sand beach. Come here to photograph the dramatic landscape, or just sit and enjoy the vast beauty. Recently, there have also been some climbing routes set up on the steeper cliffs.

Day 6

Geyser ,Gullfoss ,Thingvellir national park

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

Gullfoss (Golden Waterfall) is an iconic waterfall of Iceland offering a spectacular view of the forces and beauty of untouched nature. Gullfoss is part of the Golden Circle tour, located in South Iceland on the Hvítá (White) river which is fed by Iceland´s second biggest glacier, the Langjökull. The water plummets down 32 meters in two stages into a rugged canyon which walls reach up to 70 meters in height. On a sunny day shimmering rainbow can be seen over the falls.

One of the greatest natural attractions of Iceland and part of the famous “Golden Circle Tour”, The Great Geysir,When it was alive and shooting, it could thunderously blast a spectacular jet of superheated water and steam into the air as high as 60 to 80 meters according to different sources. Its opening is 18 meters wide and its chamber 20 meters deep
